How Our Artificial Turf Installation Turned My Backyard Into A Resort!

We converted our backyard from a weed-filled, roach-infested, sand pit… to our own personal resort.

My wife and I bought our Delray Beach home in early 2018. We vacillated a couple year on how to create oasis. Having lived in Costa Rica for the prior 13 years, we were exposed to lots of incredible flora and fauna, exotic plants and fruit trees galore.

But when the pandemic hit, our initial ideas went on hold… for 18 more month.

Living in the rain forest of Costa Rica gave us so many neat ideas. But there was one element we both had to have this time around – a feeling of living a resort lifestyle. That meant free of dust, bugs, creep-crawlies, and a place with as little maintenance as possible.

One night we were on Pinterest and there it was, “Artificial Turf Installation ideas so you don’t need to work harder in your backyard.” We perused photo after photo and “felt something” about this idea.

We tend to lean “green” and support ideas like regenerative gardening, planting native plants that thrive is a local environment and planting fruit when it’s season warrants it. So we blended these ideals with a lifestyle we hadn’t had living in the jungle.

Off to Home Depot we went to see how they could help. The same day we set up a consult with folks from Synlawn. Their rep was at our house within 72 hours and the education began.

“We’ll do it all for you: design, turf selection options, lay concrete barriers, level, provide crushed rocks and base-layer sand, install the turf and be done within a day or two.” Really? That simple?

We were given 5 artificial turf installation bids using various quality grass options. My wife chose a less quality as “we’re not going to use much of it.” But for a few extra bucks I persuaded her to the highest quality and the Lozano model.

It has real looking under tone brown strand when you pull back the top layer. And it feels fabulous between your toes and under your feet.

We inked the deal at $7,600 including all material and labor.

Three weeks later work began. First it was building up one section near our pool with three inches of base rock and sand. It needed a 3 degree pitch for proper water runoff. Here’s a glimpse:

After 5 hours of land preparation came the artificial turf installation. It came in two huge rolls. But it was pre-measured so now it was just fit-n-finish.

The guys installing it are pro’s. They spoke Spanish. Two were from Venezuela and one from Guatamala. Being from Costa Rica ourselves, we had a nice time yapping in Spanish. And the communication amongst them was clean and precise. Here they are laying the first swath of turf:

By now we could see the artificial turf installation was taking shape and form.

This was all they could complete on day one. Day two, began at 7:30am and finished after 6pm. Take a look at how is unfolds…

At first they placed our pavers into place using meticulously measure 4 inch by 4 inch spacing.

Then it was layer after layer of artificial turf installation using glues, nails, and concrete bordering so the pavers will not move. I “supervised” to ensure is was perfect – and it was just that:

Now to make the artificial turf installation complete after two full days, came the silica. They poured about 2 – 50lb bags of silica over the artificial turf installation areas. With a fancy grinder machine they blended the silica with the base of the turf. It’s to protect the turf blades from sun damage and ensure each strand stands upright.

Then they use a blower to clear away all excess silica and to compact it into the artificial turf installation. Have a look:

In total it was about $15 ft sq. And this was the highest grade turf from Synlawn. It’s been almost 60 days and my wife, daughter and I are thrilled with how it looks and the quality artificial turf installation we received.

We now have our own backyard resort. Our friends love it, family can’t wait to visit soon and we went from never spending time in our yard – for the last 4 years – to spending evenings outside enjoying our little resort.

We are thrilled. And if you’re ever considering an artificial turf installation or real grass yard… please give your full attention to artificial turf. No weed, save on water usage, green all year long and it comes with a 22 year warranty to boot.

We love our decision and our backyard!

How Our Artificial Turf Installation Transformed My Backyard Into A Resort!

We hadn’t thought our artificial turf for our yard. But after year battling weeds, chinch bugs and dying grass during winter months we had it! Now our backyard is our own resort – all thanks to installing artificial grass… one of our best decisions as homeowners.
