90% of people who move to, and are living in Delray Beach Florida spend their time indoor.
When you think of Florida growing by over 350,000 people each year, that’s a lot of folks moving here to get away from cold winters to live their dream. But why do so many hole themselves up inside and not discover ways to get outside to enjoy why they came here?
The comfort of A/C can only go so far. So in this essay (and video) I share a multitude of ways for you to get outside and enjoy living in Delray Beach.
To start, get to the beach. It’s a year-round activity – yes, even in the summer. Your choices are almost endless. You can rent a lounge chair and umbrella right here. The cost is nominal is you choose their annual package. Then there is: Snorkeling, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), surfing. Go here for more. And if you want to really add excitement to your life, go nuts learning how to kitesurf.
And then there’s beach volleyball, sailing, fishing. Try on some rollerblades and cruise the boardwalk. It’s about 1.25 mile long and when the wing blows, you’ll get a special workout. And if all this is too much to consider, the how about a nightly walk along the beach where the water meets your toes. Morning, afternoon, or evening is the perfect time to “get your salt on” and find your moment in paradise.
Now, how about enjoying our tropical fruit. If you bought a home and have a tad bit of land, plant some seed… get some planter boxes… prepare yourself for growing your own. You see, living in Delray Beach allows you to “tropicalize” your life. While most folks think this is an entertainers dream, us locals know it’s a place to grow fruit and much more.
In my yard we have banana, papaya, lime, yucca, coconuts cherries and avocados – Yes, avocados are fruit. It doesn’t take much land to grow all these. Have some sun. Add water. Done.
And then there are Mongos. Once you’re here a while, you’ll see that living in Delray Beach offer you access to all varietals of Mangos. I know of 4 types locally. And, as history goes, Delray Beach had dozens of Mango orchards over the years. You’ll drive my many like on NE 2nd Ave near Plumosa School of the Arts. And if you live near downtown, there are blocks after blocks of Mangos. Befriend a neighbor then in June/July come with paper bags to load up.
As for coconuts, I’m shocked how many folks have them in their neighborhood, but aren’t resourceful to have someone cut then down and crack them open for the water. I once went on a 10 day coconut water cleanse and eating the coconut “meat” when I felt hungry. The electrolytes, minerals, calories and good fat are enough to sustain your for weeks. Give that a try!
I get my green thumb from living in Costa Rica for over 13 years. Down there, I learned to grow all sorts of tropical fruit – some of which I would love to grow here, but I can’t get the seeds through customs.
Above I mentioned fishing. If that’s not your cup of tea, living in Delray Beach almost mandates that you eat fish. And I have the best spot for you to visit, Captain Clay & Sons. And to get to know them even better, I spoke with them at their business to get the low-down. Here’s my interview with them. The father and sons team exemplify what living in Delray Beach is all about – chill.
Next up is being mobile the right way. Yep, living in Delray Beach means grabbing your bicycle (beach cruiser), a skateboard or investing in a street-legal golf cart. It’s just our way of life. And you don’t need to go “all-out” for these. You can find used equipment and have a ball. Or, if these are not your thing, then make sure you take our FreeBee golf cart transportation. Yes, it’s free. Just give the driver a nice tip and say thank!
Then, of course are what living in Delray Beach is known for – tennis and golf. With our annual ATP Pro Tennis tournament at the Delray Beach Tennis Club, you can see some of the best tennis players in the world. We’ve seen John McEnroe and Delray Beach’s own, Coco Gauff! Make sure you come visit this event each year in the 8,000 seat venue.
And for some of you this may be a bit odd. But living in Delray Beach means enjoying the rain. That’s right, we get a lot of rain here. About 62 inches per year. When I lived in San Diego, we got about 17 inches. And where we lived in Costa Rica, about 200 inches. Overall, you’ll find that living in Delray Beach offers you fabulous afternoon thunder showers and ample rain for nice stroll along Atlantic Avenue.
And I’ll leave you with this; whether you live in a gated community with access to a pool and BarBQ… or your home has a pool… use it. Living in Delray Beach is all about an outdoor lifestyle. Get wet. Get hot. Get sandy. Either way… get outside and enjoy what living in Delray Beach has to offer.
This is not New York. It’s not New Jersey. It’s Not Minnesota. This is Delray Beach. This is Florida. And living in Delray Beach Florida is your time to get outdoors… oh, and make sure you’re equipped with flip flops, a hat, and some low-ingredient natural sunblock. You’ll thank you soon.
The RIGHT WAY to enjoy LIVING IN Delray Beach Florida. You moved here for your reason. Then you stay indoors because it’s hot and you need A/C. But that’s not why you moved to Delray Beach Florida. The right way to enjoy living in Delray Beach Florida is being outdoors. You know: beach, golf, tennis, biking, golf carts, beach volleyball, parks, sports, and on and on…
