This month, Delray Beach Florida became the first beach town in the continental United States to receive the Blue Flag – an international eco-label that recognizes beaches and marinas that meet high standards of environmental management.
The award is given by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-profit organization that promotes environmental education and sustainable development.
To be eligible for the Blue Flag, beaches must meet a set of criteria that includes:
- Good water quality
- Effective management of waste and sewage
- A clean and safe environment
- Environmental education and information for visitors
Delray Beach was able to meet all of these criteria, thanks to the efforts of the city’s Department of Environmental Services. The department has been working for years to improve the water quality at Delray Beach, and it has also implemented a number of programs to educate the public about environmental issues.
On Friday, May 20th, city workers and citizens gathered to enjoy the ceremony at the Delray Beach Pavillion. It was a joyous moment at an historic location. Well over one hundred folks heard from Blue Flag representatives and Delray Beach leadership.
The cars driving by had no idea how significant this event and moment for Delray Beach is. We heard cars honking, but more importantly we saw Delray’s Blue Flag rise. This is one of the most proud recognitions Delray Beach has been given over the years. It ranks high along with it’s 3 All-American City Awards.
