Sustainable real estate is a topic most folks are not comfortable with, yet. As such, we have a long way to go to understand the pro’s/con’s and benefits.
Case in point is the chart on sustainable real estate ideas below. 52% of people surveyed by reputable John Burns Research are not familiar with tax credits and deductions for clean energy. But if you peruse thru the Inflation Reduction Act there’s an entire section dedicated to sustainability.
And in the National Association of Realtors (NAR) 2023 REALTORS Sustainability Report, about sustainable real estate consumer responses shed more light on this:
* Importance of green home features considered important:
– Windows, door, and siding (39%)
– Proximity to frequently visited places (37%)
– Comfortable living space (37%)
– A homes utility bills/operation cost (25%)
* Sustainable real estate consumer interest:
– 48% were somewhat or interested
* Solar Panels:
– 34% said properties with solar panels increased the perceived value of a property
* Comfort about discussing a home’s performance:
– 34% were comfortable answering questions about a homes performance
– 26% were ‘very’ uncomfortable
More Sustainable Real Estate Nuggets
* The value of energy efficiency promotion – 63% of agents and brokers said promoting energy efficiency in listings is valuable.
* Multiple Listing Service
– 32% of said their MLS had green data fields
– 37% working in a market with MLS green data fields used them to promote green features
– 24% used the fields to promote energy information
– 14% to promote green certifications.

The most important takeaway you should focus on is the cost saving you can achieve by slowly upgrading your home with more sustainable appliances, lighting and water ideas. While some folks think this is a burden, it’s quite easy. And, it may be a talking point at your next home entertaining event.
There’s a lot of sustainable real estate education available for consumers, realtors and builders. I could go on and on – and I will in future essays – but you get the gist.
