I’ve been sneezing more in the last few weeks than I have my entire life.
Is it the budding Mango trees throughout Delray Beach? Is it from my dog’s skin infection? What about our home ventilation system or our laundry dryer vent?
The American Lung Association says indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. So, if you’re thinking of starting your green real estate journey, here are some tips dedicated to improving the indoor air quality (IAQ) in your home:
Green Real Estate and Healthy Indoor Air
* Recognize IAQ’s impact on health. Poor IAQ can result in coughing, a stuffy nose, sore throat, and headaches.
* Understand poor IAQ causes. Learn about indoor pollutants and their impact on poor IAQ.
* Eliminate air pollutants like tobacco smoke, mold, pollen, toxins from cleaning products, bug sprays, solvents, and paint.
* Indoor Plants. Not only due they freshen up the air, plants bring new clean oxygen and make your interior full of energy.
* Improve ventilation. Bring as much fresh air into your home as possible. Open windows, use air filters, and turn on fans.
* Control mold. Keep humidity levels no higher than 50%, use exhaust fans that vent outside in the kitchen and bathroom, and be sure the clothes dryer vents are cleaned every 90 days. Also, fix roof, walls, or plumbing leaks so mold doesn’t have moisture to grow.
* Transition to clean energy – Choose efficient electric alternatives and induction cooktops. Such changes can improve air quality and comfort, and lower your home’s operating costs.
I’ve been writing more about green real estate in the past year as I see a lot of homes in South Florida. And the more I see, the more aware I am of the inefficiencies in them.
It’s no surprise considering our tropical weather. The South Florida area bakes in the summer heat with humidity and dew point with high readings… then dry’s out with the winter (most of the time).
That could be in the form of air leakage, odors, vent moisture, water leaks, molds… you name it. So it behoves me to share green real estate ideas with you so you can get a jump on issues you may have in your home.
It makes a huge difference to have a clean, efficient and presentable home when it comes to selling. And with fresh clean air, you can just feel it.
So if there’s anything I may do to assist you in getting your home ready to sell, please reach out to me anytime. We can decide which green real estate ideas are more suitable for your home.
